Okay - so the HaikuThon has started (see at the bottom of this journal entry for more info). This doesn't mean the Chain Gang Challenge is over. Please keep writing Chain Gang poems when you get the inspiration. And if you have a day or two in the HaikuThon when you just can't think of something to write - come here and find inspiration by replying to a poem. I have no problem with people using Chain Gang Challenge poems as entries for the HaikuThon (just make sure you post the Chain Gang version on its own as well so it continues the chain).

We have had poems from beginner poets who know very little about haiku to some of the most accomplished haiku poets on DA. So please take part - and please tell your watchers and friends about it. Let's try and get this in the Guinness Book of Records for the longest, most confusing linked poem ever written.

Okay, so the Haiku Chain Gang Challenge is going swimmingly! The point of the whole thing is to respond to haiku poems with haiku poems to create a massive linked poem. But there is more to it than this - because every poem can have multiple links to and from it. I started the chain with a poem, which has had 7 responses so far, and each of these has spread out with various responses too. In traditional renga there is a 'hokku' (a starting verse) which is then replied to by a poet. Then this poem is replied to by a poet, and so on (it goes in a straight, linear direction). With multi-dimensional renga each poem has the potential to become a 'hokku' (a starting verse) for a whole new chain of poems. Here's the poem that started it off:

So, there it is. Choose any one of these poems and treat it as a 'hokku' (a starting verse) and reply to it in haiku form. Don't worry if it has already had responses - part of the point is to have multiple replies to each poem. Then make sure to tell me that you've replied (either here or on my original poem) and make sure to tell the poet you are replying to so they can link to your poem. Make sure to clearly explain in the Artists Comments that you want people to reply to yours in turn, and put a link to the poem you are replying to, and this journal (so that people can chart the progress). Hopefully we can create the most confusing, multiplicitous, fungus-like haiku renga ever made (or renku as they are called these days, I believe).

NAMING THE POEMS: At the end of the day, as long as it eventually gets included in the links above I don't mind what you name the poems. But I have been following a system. If you look at SET ONE you will see that I have replied to Saiun, whose poem is 3a, as part of Set 1. And my poem is the fourth in a chain (coming after Saiun's 3a). So my poem would be called "Link 4: Set 1: 3a." But as I said, call it whatever you want as long as you let me know where I can find the poem and who you are replying to.

-HISTORY OF THE HAIKU CHAIN GANG-

All of this started when a prompt by Bekkia bekkia.deviantart.com/journal/… asked poets to "Write a haiku about something you saw today." This inspired Anavah to write the following poem: anavah.deviantart.com/art/Nine…

This was then replied to by Tinkwig, who I decided to respond to. Then others responded in turn creating a nice chain of events. There were 2 responses to Mahi-Fish's poem (hence 6a and 6b). 7 is a response to Megsmad, rather than HaikuKitty. Here is the full list here:

JULY HAIKUTHON!!!!!!


All of this is a lead up to the fabulous HaikuThon, organised by Iscariot-Priest, which starts in just 2 days (on the 30th of July). The HaikuThon is an event where haiku poets write one poem a day (each) for a month. It is a whole lot of fun. A whole range of people join from beginners to more experienced poets. Don't let a lack of experience hold you back - the HaikuThon is a perfect place to cut your teeth with this lovely Japanese form. Just remember - the haiku in modern English doesn't have to be 5-7-5 (although anything longer than 5-7-5 tends to be a little long).
